TidalStream Technology

The TidalStream Triton platform enables highly cost effective deployment and operation for a number of horizontal axis tidal turbines.  A number of alternative turbines can be used, the Triton platform providing the installation and maintenance base that will reduce costs and provide safe operating conditions.

Benefits:

The Triton platform improves the cost effectiveness of single tidal turbines by:

 

  • creating a multi-MW system with a single seabed shear foundation - up to 10MW
  • enabling float-out installation without barges, cranes, jack-ups or divers
  • providing a stable platform for safe and simple topside access to machinery and systems
  • maximising energy capture by using the full depth of the tidal stream (currents near the surface generally run significantly faster than those near the seabed)
  • maximising energy and reducing loads by allowing the turbines to align with the flow
     

Seabed Anchorage:

The connection to the seabed is vital to withstand several hundred tonnes of sideways thrust from the turbines.

Unlike other tidal turbine anchorages, there are no large overturning moments, just shear, so that a number of alternative methods are possible, depending on the seabed conditions, depth, currents and accessibility to possible drilling plant.

The Triton technology is scalable - from a twin rotor system up to 2MW system for constrained sites up to the six-rotor 10 MW platform for deeper water and highly energetic sites.
